What's in the Name?
Our name may conjure up visions of vampires and bats, but this Transylvania doesn't come from the Romanian region made famous by Count Dracula. Actually, "Transylvania" is Latin for "across the woods," which is the name the pioneers gave this area when they founded it in the eighteenth century.
And we're more than just a name. Transylvania University is a renowned liberal arts college in downtowndowntowndowntown Lexington, Kentuckythe heart of the beautiful Bluegrass region. Transylvania became the 16th college in America when it was founded in 1780, so as you can imagine, it is deeply rooted in history and has produced a long line of graduates who have impacted the world.

Transylvanias campus is also within walking distance to lots of the citys attractions. Downtown Lexington has a very active nightlife and is a preferred stop for big-ticket and grassroots concerts and plays.
And you wont have to worry about going alone. When you get to campus, new-student orientation introduces you to a small group of your peers, and Transylvanias Greek life is one of the most active in the country.

Tuition alone covers about two thirds of the actual cost of educating our students. Contributions to the Annual Fund — the University's "checking account" — make it possible to offer financial aid, make improvements to the campus, recruit top professors and students, and meet other recurring needs.
