Very likely you have heard Gomer Pyle (Jim Nabors) say these words on television in his own personal style. We all like surprises, as long as they are to our benefit. In this article,
we will deal with surprises, but it's unlikely these surprises will be welcomed, as they are not to our benefit.
First, let's establish from Scripture that a day of judgment is coming for all mankind (Acts 17:30-31; Hebrews 9:27, 10:30; Matthew 25:31-33; II Corinthians 5:10). There are other passages as well, but these should be enough to convince us of a judgment day, that is, if we believe God's word.
Now, back to the surprises. "Not everyone who says to me 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven." (Matthew 7:21). It's important to know who Jesus is talking about being surprised: Some in the Church of Christ will be surprised. They will learn that "cold formalism" (outward show usually displayed for an hour on Sunday morning) has not pleased God (Matthew 15:8). They will be surprised that a heart filled with hate is just as bad as murder.
All who reject the Bible will be surprised. The atheist will be surprised to learn there IS a God (Psalm 14:1). The unbeliever will believe, but it will be too late (John 8:24; 12:48). What about all the "good, moral people" who felt they could let their conscience be their guide? "...for all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God..." (Romans 3:23). Besides, "O LORD, I know that way of man is not in himself; it is not in man who walks to direct his own steps." (Jeremiah 10:23).
Some who claim to be Christians will be surprised. Many preachers will be surprised to discover that God meant what He said about preaching the truth (Galatians 1:6-9). The one who became an "innovator of Scripture," twisting passages to suit the situation (II Peter 3:16), those claiming "faith only" salvation (James 2:17, 24-26), and the unimmersed believers who were convinced that baptism was not necessary for salvation (Acts 2:38; Mark 16:16), will all be reminded of the authority of Christ (Matthew 28:18; John 12:48).
Don't be surprised on Judgment Day. God's word provides the answers - follow it to be sure. If you have doubts, don't wait too long and be surprised.
