Some say they'll definitely stock some units with ratings below 13-SEER, particularly those in the 10-SEER range, which cost-sensitive builders and contractors can install after the manufacturing deadline. Others are essentially ready to clear out the old and bring in the new, hoping for a quick conversion of buyers to the new standard starting mid-2005. Some contract builders will want to warehouse 10-SEER equipment. They're not going to pay a higher price. Most of them are putting in 10-SEER now and won't step up even to 12-SEER because it costs more money. The second major impact will involve physical size of the 13-SEER and higher equipment. 13-SEERs are about 70% larger than 10-SEERs in cubic footage. Size factors of new equipment may cause many homeowners to make decisions about replacements and upgrades now. If space for the indoor coil and outdoor unit is tight, homeowners may want to consider less than 13-SEER equipment replacement very soon. 13-SEERs will also require larger return air openings and smooth duct transitions to allow for adequate air flow.
