What is hypnosis?
Many people have definitions for hypnosis, such as:
Hypnosis is a state of intensified attention and receptiveness to an idea or set of ideas. (Erickson)
It is a natural state of heightened awareness where you accept suggestion from without and from within. (Stockwell)
Hypnosis is a willingness to be receptive to beneficial ideas and to allow these ideas to be acted upon without interference. (Witzenhoffer & Hilgard)
Hypnosis is the bypass of the critical factor of the conscious mind followed by the abilty to accept suggestions. (U.S. Department of Labor)
Hypnosis is a deep state of relaxation creating focused attention. (Peters)
In this manner, the subconscious mind is open and alert. Any messages from the past can be addressed.
How does hypnosis work?
Probably not as you think or expect. Many of the misconceptions people have about hypnosis is or what happens during hypnosis are a result of it being portrayed unfairly by Hollywood and television.
Most people think of the hypnotist waving the gold watch or pendulum in front of a person who is then under the complete control of the hypnotist. Nothing could be more ridiculous or further from the truth of how hypnosis works!
