Mission Statment: The common mission of our blended community is to welcome all people, to reach out and serve the needs of others, to grow together, to sing praises to God and to proclaim God's abundant love
Messiah Trinity Church has a blended Lutheran-Episcopal worship service every Sunday at 10:45am. There is a Sunday school for children and a newly remodeled nursery for babies and toddlers during the worship service. At Messiah Trinity, we seek to be a place where all people are welcome and all are spiritually fed.
Music for worship services are provided by organist/choir director Dr. Greg Witte and our church choir. New choir members are always welcome. Practices are held at 9:30am before the Sunday service during the summer months and for two hours on Sunday evenings from September through May.
One Sunday every month, Father Allen, Dr Witte and the church choir provide a worship service for the staff and the clients of Hazelwood. Hazelwood is a residential facility for the mentally and physically handicapped.
We believe that the church is Christ living and visible in the world. This does not mean that any group is perfect. In fact, belonging to a church is an exercise in patience, forbearance, and love. As at every baptism, each person is asked to renew his or her baptismal covenant. One of the questions is “Will you continue in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of the bread and in the prayers?” We believe that we are called to continue practices that date back to the time of Jesus.
Our Sunday worship services include readings from the Old and New Testaments, a Psalm and a Gospel. Father Allen teaches a short children’s sermon (after which the children go to their Sunday school class) and a sermon based on the readings for the adults. We celebrate Holy Communion each Sunday.
Our denomination observes the church calendar year and living through the various seasons gives special meaning to our worship. The two principle features are Christmas and Easter and for each there is a period of preparation: Four weeks of Advent before Christmas and forty days of Lent leading up to Easter. We have a short service on Wednesday nights during Advent, which is organized around a particular theme of preparation for Christmas. On Wednesdays during Lent we have a simple supper followed by a study led by Father Allen. Easter day begins with a continental breakfast followed by the Easter Sunday service. After the service there is an egg hunt for the children and a coffee hour for the adults.
There are many ways in which the congregation of Messiah Trinity tries to live out their faith. Because we are a small congregation and have to conserve our financial resources, church members give of their time and talent to maintain the inside and outside of the church building. Church members also maintain the lawn, trees, and memorial garden. Collecting and recycling aluminum cans cover expenses for lawn care. We are a thrifty group!
We take seriously our call to common mission and have been prayerfully searching for ways to reach out to others and make a difference in the community. In response to this we offer a free meal at church on the fourth Thursday of each month. All are welcome!
The financial and temporal affairs of the church are administered by a church board consisting of six Lutheran and six Episcopal members elected by the congregation for three-year terms. Board members and Father Allen meet at the church on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00p.m.
Our young people are the future of the church and we have several programs designed to teach them the doctrines of the faith and to give them opportunities to contribute by serving as crucifer and acolytes during the services, helping at dinners, etc… We have a weeklong evening vacation bible school in the summer in which dinner is served followed by games outside (weather permitting). Participants then rotate through periods of story/lesson time, crafts, and music. VBS involves 30-40 young people and a staff of volunteers and is a wildly enthusiastic and fun filled week.
Each summer, several of the young people attend the Diocesan youth camps located at All Saints Center in Leitchfield, Kentucky.
The church sponsors Cub Pack #344 for boys from ages 6-11. Meetings are held every Tuesday, except the second Tuesday of each month, from 7 - 8p.m.
Our softball team, the “Holy Hitters”, participates in a church softball league administered by Jeffersontown Ministries. The season consists of eight to ten games played on Sunday afternoons at J-town Municipal Park.
The church holds a spring rummage sale, which involves the sale of items donated by church members, food, baked goods, crafts, and the rental of booth space to people outside the church who want to participate.
The annual Fall Festival that is held in September is our largest undertaking and involves many members of the congregation who prepare and sell food and baked goods, manage game booths, coordinate booth rentals and run a rummage sale. The Red Cross Blood Mobile is also in attendance, there is also an annual chili cook-off judged by the Okolona Fire Dept. and a local celebrity.
Messiah Trinity has a strong tradition of outreach and mission work. We support the St. John Center, a day shelter for homeless men, by making regular donations of coffee, socks, gloves, and toboggans.
A member of the congregation serves on the board of MUSCL (Ministries United of South Central Louisville), the local ministerial association, which we support with a monthly offering. Members also make donations of cleaning products, toiletries, diapers and other items not covered by food stamps. In the fall we collect backpacks and other school supplies, which MUSCL distributes to needy children.
We support a Habitat for Humanity project sponsored by local Lutheran churches, by providing lunches for the work crews.
Once a month members of the congregation visit the Good Samaritan nursing home and run an afternoon bingo for the residents. Flowers from the altar are taken to nursing homes and shut-ins after Sunday services.
During Christmas members bake and donate cookies, which are distributed to people who work on the river, this project is coordinated through the Seamen’s Institute. We also fill stockings with candy and plastic boxes with gifts for children at the Wayside Christian Mission. In addition we donate new toys and clothing to the St. Vincent DePaul mission for its Santa shop.
The children, with direction from adult members of the congregation, present a Christmas play. The play is preceded by a supper. Ticket sales for the play and supper support the youth activities of the church.
Some church members are involved in a prayer shawl ministry. Shawls are crocheted or knitted then given to a person who has suffered personal loss through death of a loved one or divorce. Each shawl comes with a special prayer for the recipient. Other projects include the making of lap robes for local nursing home residents. All help is welcomed for these projects.
