Welcome to Durham Kennels

Durham Kennels is owned and operated by trainer Jim Durham. We are located on ten wooded acres in beautiful Berea, Kentucky, 30 minutes from Lexington, just off I-75. Durham Kennels offers a variety of services including canine obedience training, boarding, grooming and day care. Because your dog or cat is a beloved family member, we understand that choosing a boarding kennel or a qualified trainer is an important decision. That’s why we encourage you to come and visit our facility and see for yourself the “caring home environment” that Jim and his wife, Leslie, have created for your pet. If you have just purchased a brand new pup or have opened your heart to an adoptee from the local humane society, call us! Jim will provide personal “coaching” and guidance during those first few weeks of pet ownership and answer any questions you may have that this website does not answer. You can even call before you purchase or adopt your pet and he will give you tips and guidelines on choosing the right pet for you and your family.

Our home is located right next to our kennels, allowing us to provide the highest quality personal care and attention available. We make every effort to ensure that your pet’s “home away from home” is as comfortable as possible. Because exercise is essential for your pet’s health and well-being, especially when staying away from home, several periods of daily exercise are provided for each of our guests. The fee for this service is included in the daily rate and is never an expensive add-on. Feel free to call any time your pet is staying with us and we will give you an update on how they are doing or how their training is coming along.

Obedience training is a “must” for your pet’s safety and well-being. It gives you access to critical information and guidance and helps to ensure a lasting and rewarding relationship between you and your dog. Most dogs love the training, want to please you, and can make major behavioral changes with the right kind of instruction. Jim has been training dogs for over twenty-five years and has developed his own unique approach that combines firm and consistent guidance and repetition with lots of loving care. Our goal is to make training a positive and happy experience for both you and your furry friend.
Jim offers obedience training a couple of different ways. You can come to our kennel for private classes, during which Jim will teach you the basic obedience commands and work with you and your dog until you understand these commands and can execute them yourself. Another option is to leave your dog with us for a three week in-kennel training period. Jim will work with your dog on a daily basis to instill the basic obedience commands. Then you and other family members will come back for follow-up classes in which he will teach you what your dog has learned and provide coaching for you in following through with the basic commands. The key to successful obedience training is your commitment and willingness to spend time every day working and playing with your dog.
