Founded in 1980, Friends School is a nonprofit, nonsectarian, family cooperative school whose mission is to provide experiential, child-centered educational opportunities for children of all abilities. Our programs serve children twelve months throughsecond gradeand celebrate the uniqueness of each child.
The educational program at Friends School follows the belief that each child is a unique person with special interests, skills and needs.Since the school's inception, Friendshas grown to become a high quality, non-sectarian, family cooperative. The school offers a highly individualized, developmentally appropriate program aimed at the whole child. We promote respect for differences, nonviolence, noncompetitiveness and parental involvement. Classes are small and taught by highly-qualified, degreed teachers. Children of all abilities are welcomed into Friends School, as we recognize that every individual has an equally valuable contribution to make to our community.
Friends School encourages families to be involved in their children's education by providing many opportunities to work within the school. Research has demonstrated that family involvement creates a higher quality educational experience. Families are expected to co-op - or work three hours per month for the school. This is done by working in the classroom, serving on committees, helping with fundraisers, etc. All persons working in the classroom are required to have a clean criminal background check completed and on file.
Classes are taught by dedicated, experienced, credentialed teachers. With one teacher and assistant per class,a low student-teacher ratio is maintained. Parents assisting in the classroom further decrease the child to adult ratio.
We are also 3-STAR program and fully licensed by the State of Kentucky. Our philosophy of mainstreaming children with special needs has brought national recognition by Exceptional Parent magazine. We also serve as a resource for local colleges and universities in the training of new teachers.
We are located at 901 Breckenridge Lane, Louisville, Kentucky, in St. John's Lutheran Church. Want to know more? Contact us at 502-899-1822.
