What is Chiropractic?
Chiropracic is a health care system that centers around the health of the spine. Most patients enter a chiropractors office because they have pain in their back, or neck. While injuries to the spine are common, most people don't realize that problems with the spine can cause many other health ailments.
The spine is made up of 24 moveable segments called vertebra. In between these segments are discs, which are the natural shock absorbers of the spine. The health of the spine is very important because it protects the spinal cord which carries messages along the nerves to and from the brain. Theses messages tell your body how to function. Therefore if the spine is misaligned or not functioning correctly, the body may not function at its best.
The Chiropractors primary treatment is called the adjustment. When a vertebra is mis-aligned or not functioning properly, the chiropractor applies a very controlled, precise thrust to the affected segment. This is called an adjustment. It is common for the adjustment to cause a clicking or popping sound. A detailed consultation, examination and possibly x-rays, helps the chiropractor determine the specific vertebra that needs adjusting. A series of adjustments is usually necessary to allow the body to heal correctly.
What should I expect during my first visit?
For the chiropractor to properly diagnose and treat your condition it is necessary to find out alot about your current and past health. A thorough consultation is important to find out how your problem started and if there are any complicating factors. An examination is then necessary to help determine if the condition is one that would respond to chiropractic care or require other heatlh professionals.
X-rays of your spine may be necessary to help determine how long the problem with your spine may have existed. Many times the spine degenerates without causing pain or impairment. X-rays also help rule out other conditions that may require another professional's care. All of this information helps us craft a treatment plan that is specific to your condition.
Once your condition has been diagnosed, in-office treatment may begin on the first visit, or may be delayed for a day or two to allow for certain home therapies to help stabilize your condition.
I hear that once you start seeing a chiropractor, you have to go for the rest of your life? Is that true?
The key question is not "do I HAVE to go for the rest of my life, but do I WANT to go for the rest of my life? There is a big difference here! Many patients who come to the chiropractor for the first time, really don't know what to think. That was my experience when I first visited a chiropractor 35 years ago. I had hurt my back while working in the oil industry. I was feeling great after about 10-12 adjustments, but would return for maintanance or tune-up adjustments about every month or so. You see, the body is a machine. Any machine (like your car) has to be tuned up or maintained from time to time. How many times has your auto mechanic suggested that you NOT change your oil or align your car's front end?
Anyway, I noticed that I was feeling better than I had in years and WANTED to go back for additional adjustments. So the answer to the question is NO. You don't HAVE to go to a
chiropractor for the rest of your life, only if you want to function at your best!
